"Gardens... should be like lovely, well-shaped girls: all curves, secret corners, unexpected deviations, seductive surprises and then still more curves."
H.E. Bates had a lifelong love of nature that is forever evident his writing.
This section of the website will concentrate on detailing his love of gardening and the garden at The Granary in Kent in which he worked for half a century. within this area I will also take a closer look at the gardening books that he wrote including The Seasons and the Gardener, which he wrote for his children, as well as A Love of Flowers and A Fountain of Flowers both published in the early 1970's.
"A garden should be in a constant state of fluid change, expansion, experiment, adventure; above all it should be an inquisitive, loving, but self-critical journey on the part of its owner."
